Missy B. is on a distinguished road
Default Wisconsin to Indy

Hello. Our names are Pete and Missy and we are going to be moving to the Indy area as soon as our house sells (which we hope will be by mid-Summer). I am a nursing student and want to live close to a major hospital, preferrably a Clarian, Community, or St. Vincent facility. We are an african american couple with a grown daughter who will attend IU or Ivy Tech -- she can commute so that is not a problem. Our concern is that we do not know the area well enough to know where to move without concerns over our race. We don't want to move into an area that has racial tension so I am posting on this board to get HONEST comments about the different areas. We are willing to spend no more than $200K on a nice 2-3 BR condo.

We have been considering condos in the Fishers area and have seen some that we like.

Carmel is out for living there because you get so much less square footage for the $$.

We recently began to consider Brownsburg. It seems that you get even more SF for the money.

Also, I am concerned about commuting times for Fishers and Brownsburg. I plan to work the AM shift which will start at 6 or 7 AM at one of the hospitals so commute time is a factor.

Thanks.

Be blessed,

Missy & Pete

Try to get the new job first and then pick the house second. Will make a lot of your decisions for you. No sense living on the far west side if your job is in the Northeast corner for example. There are nice communities in every corner although friends have told me to avoid the southwest corner of the whole area if you are AfricanAmerican. I dont live there and have no first hand experience but they were discussing what they felt. Otherwise, job commute and child's education are the two biggest factors in choosing a location to live.

I would also suggest that you not rule out the imediate downtown area. There are a lot of new condos that have come up recently especially in the Old Northside neighborhood that are in the $200 - $250 range. I know that there are some really great condos that just came up in Fall Creek Place on the north side of Downtown. Fall Creek Place is a large Neighborhood that has been completely redone and is a very good place to look. It's also close to the Hospital.

Also, I live in a very safe neighbohrood on the Eastside called Little Flower and we have small single-famly 2-3 bedroom bungalows in the $100 - $130 range. I just hope that you don't limit yourself to the suburbs because there are so many other better and more interesting places to live than Fishers and brownsburg. I don't know about the whole race thing but most places with the exception of the burbs are pretty well mixed. There are only a few places that I can think of that you might have any trouble (I don't really want to mention them) and you probably wouldn't be interested in those places anyway. Best Wishes!

Missy, check your private messages. I sent you some info on a house I found downtown.

It would be great to live very close to a major job center and for your daughter to have great access to schools. This house has all of that. She would be 5 minutes away from Ivy Tech and you would be within walking distance to the nine downtown hospitals and IUPUI for less than $200.
