Another moving to thread....Carmel/Fishers
Hi guys. This is a very informative board and I have learned a lot about Indy from it. Thanks!
Myself and my family may be moving to the Indy area. We are late 20's and have a 4 almost 5 year old that will be starting school in the fall. My wife's job will be located off N. Meridian and 116th. I work for the railroad in Avon.
We have looked at apartments on the net until we are blue in the face and I want a little first hand feedback about some good ones around that area. We are looking for 2 bedrooms around the 850-900$ price range. Two that caught our eye were Main Street on Monon and Lakes of Carmel. Anyone have information about either of those?
We have looked in Fishers/Zionsville/Westfield as well, but not sure how the commute would be for me to Avon. I would like for her to be close to work. She cringes at the thought of driving on 465 Also the school system is very important and from what I gather, we couldn't really go wrong in that area at all.
Any and all feedback is welcome and thanks in advance! Oh and we are currently living in Fort Wayne. She is from this area and I am from Eastern Kentucky. Been here for about 6-7 years now.

If you want to be close to her job, then it sounds like you're on the right track. Commuting to Carmel every day from Avon can be a pain. Of course, going the other way is no fun either. Why not try for something a little more in-between?

I live in Carmel and did look at several apartments before choosing Providence at Old meridian. I would highly recommend it, but 2 bedrooms are over $1,000. I have heard some really good things about Main Street on the Monon - so of the two you mention I would pick that over Lakes of Carmel.
The commute from Carmel to Avon isn't too bad. I commute from Carmel to 86th and Michigan road everyday and the traffic is worse going the other direction. (I can't tell you about the traffic near Avon in the mornings - although once again I would think you are going the opposite way of the heavy traffic.

I used to commute from West 38th Street to Castleton in the morning and the other way at night. The worst part of the commute was getting stuck where 465 and 65 meet on the west side, though you would be going opposite of that if you are going home to Carmel, and I don't remember northbound traffic getting backed up as bad as southbound. Another hotspot is the nowrthwest corner where 465 curves from north-south to east-west; but this is usually only a couple of minute delay in either direction at its worst.
The worst thing about that route; if there is an accident on 465; there are no good alternate routes. While not a common occurance, there were times when it took an hour to get home in the evening because of a car accident.

Zionsville is closer to Avon than is Carmel. But the apartment selection is very limited, and although you are close to Avon, time traveled won't be that much less.

We looked at Providence at Old Meridan on the internet. Looks like a really nice complex but yeah, just a bit out of our price range. I have read good reviews about Main Street on the Monon also. It doesn't look like they have garages which is a big deal for me tho.
We really would like for our son to be in the school system in that area. Hamilton county I think?? hence the reason we aren't really looking anywhere closer to Avon. Also it could be disastrous if my wife has to deal with 465 traffic, she can handle traffic just not high speed traffic, go figure huh
We are going down Tuesday which is tomorrow to look closer at some apartments. I guess my biggest concern was the commute for me. It looks like I could handle it from Carmel and west of Carmel. How is the commute from Fishers? I've heard the traffic is worst there, I'm guessing because of 69/465 cluster? Seems as money goes a little further in the apartment you can get in Fishers as well as a house later on when we look to buy. I know Noblesville is probably way too far away for me to commute? Correct? I'm looking to keep it under an hour. 30-45minutes is more than ok.
Thanks guys! and Gals!
Also I would be on call, so would be driving to Avon at different hours. No set hours for me.

If you are working strange hours, you will want to be aware that overnight, I-465 is one lane each way at times depending on where the accelerate 465 project is. When I got off work at 9; I would get stuck on 465 for as long as a half hour going from just south of 71st street to my exit on 38th Street. That portion of the project is done, and I think the primary construction is closer to Rockville Road as of now; I think it will move to Crawfordsville Road soon. Just be aware of what disruptions the accelerate 465 project might pose. If you are not traveling at night, it is really a non-issue.

The commute from Carmel to Avon isn't bad at all. Certainly less than 45 minutes, more like 30. Most apartment complexes in Carmel are OK, just stay away from Mohawk - they are closing and are terrible anyway, and also stay away from Stone Gate - they are gov't subsidized.
All the schools in Carmel are excellent - so any of these complexes will work

Monon & Main is a nice area. I don't know about garages, but I bet you could find something around there if you're looking to garage a vehicle to work on, etc. Obviously, if you want something to park in every day that's a different matter. If you're working at the large railyard in Avon (the only railyard in Avon, for that matter), there are a couple alternate routes you can take to go north/south if traffic on 465 is a nightmare, although those routes may not be much faster. For me, I'd rather drive 35 mph than to sit in traffic on an interstate.

Yup, that's exactly what I want a garage for. I have a mustang which is basically a pleasure vehicle that I drive occasionally so daily parking is not the reason for one. Yup, that's the yard I will be working at for CSX. Can you tell me the alternate routes? I would like to know those in case of a wreck or bad traffic on 465. Thanks.
