If you go south of US 40 and west of I-70 the topography varies pretty wildly.

Noblesville has an adorable little town with an ice cream shop and various events on weekends for families. There's a lake for water sports and it's fairly close to Indianapolis, IN.
The high school does a homecoming parade every year and the whole town goes out for it [it's actually a city]. Of course there's a parade on the 4th. Santa comes to visit every Holiday with his very own house at town square for kids to visit.
It's a great place to raise a family.
I moved here in HS from Cherry Hill, NJ back in the late '80s. We lived in Indianapolis [Lawrence], I've also lived in Fishers. I love NOblesville.
Enjoy.

TNTWalter...thanks for the description. That sounds like exactly what we are looking for. I appreciate everyone's input and hopefully we will be joining your community soon. Gotta wait on the job opportunities to open up unfortunately. Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

Noblesville, Carmel, Fishers, all great places to live. I moved from Morris (NJ) county to Hamilton county and I can say that there is no better place to bring up a family than Hamilton county. The quality of life could only be better (for me anyway) if it never went below 50 degrees. Aside from that, that part of Indiana has relatively mild winters compared to northern Jersey.
I have to say that before you go, enjoy the shore, pizza and having someone pump your gas. Lace up your tennis shoes and get ready for a pitch-in.
Oh and , GO COLTS!!

Eagle Creek City Park (West 56th Street) and Fort Harrison State Park (East 56th Street area) both have great hiking. Eagle Creek is better for canoeing IMO. You also have Geist Reservoir in NE Indianapolis and Morse Reservoir in Hamilton County. South of Indianapolis you have some really good state parks in Brown County, McCromick's Creek State Park and Morgan-Monroe State Forest. Brown County is excellent in the fall for seeing the autumn foliage. To the west of Indianapolis is Turkey Run State Park. Each of these have excellent hiking and camping and most are within 1 - 1 1/2 hours of Indianapolis. They make really nice day or weekend trips.

By the way, how are winters in Indiana?

Hi, yes, Hamilton County is great. we moved here from WI and so far, I have no complaints about the county. As far as your husband, I have heard that many of the local PD and FD departments have hiring freezes due to the economy. Your husband may try the ER of local hospitals which frequently look for EMT's to work. The winters are not bad just unpredictable. One day its warm and the next, there is an ice storm. But, I will caution. Indiana does not like to use salt on the roads so you will have to adjust to the ice driving )
