Nice, attractive town between Indy & Muncie?
Since I am moving to Indiana from Arkansas for my job as a teacher at Indiana School for the Deaf in Indianapolis, I really need to hear from the Hoosiers more about areas I should live in. I still have until July 2009 to get settled so I am not in a hurry.
Since I will be attending Ball State in Muncie for graduate school, I am hoping to live in medium-sized town near the interstate halfway between Ball State and my job in Indy. I am thinking either Pendleton or Anderson, but I would like to be little closer to Downtown Indy for entertainment through opera, art galleries, and museums, diversity, and plenty of ethnic restaurants especially ones with sushi. Noblesville sounds very nice but it's two lanes road to Muncie though. Any other suggestions?
Anything you can share would help me very much whenever I visit Central Indiana in May trying to find a nice 2-bedrooms apartment.
Do you think I will like Indiana? It's a huge step especially with the fact I chose Indiana over Maryland due to cheaper cost of living, lower taxes, and city living while maintaining small town charms plus it's closer to Arkansas where I am from. Although I heard people saying how boring Indy is, it can't be no worse than my hometown Little Rock. LOL!

Avoid Anderson, run down, unattractive.
Pendleton is small, homey.
Both should have low housing costs, but with that, I would imagine harder to sell once you choose to move.
Fishers straddles I-69, NE side of Indy, just a quick trip to BSU.
Great schools, clean, safe, quiet, lots of amenities.
Housing is more expensive but the area is desirable so resale isn't as much of a problem. This past year voted as one of the top 10 places to live in the US. Easy trip to downtown Indy.

I vote for Pendleton. But you could also live on the northeast side of Fishers, as close to Exit 10 (off I-69) as possible and have an easy commute up to Muncie. You'd be reverse commuting both ways, so it wouldn't be bad at all.

Mitch-
Ball State offers some graduate classes in downtown Indy. Would that not be an option for you? Also, I must ask....Which school in Arkansas did you attend? I went to high school and college in Jonesboro before moving to Indy, so I might have some insight for you.

It's great to hear from an Arkansan in Indy before moving. I happen to be from the same area in a small town called Paragould myself. No, I didn't Attend ASU; I graduated from the Univ. of Ark. in Fayetteville with BA Degree in Secondary History Education last year.
Sadly, I won't be able to attend Ball State in Indy since the main campus in Muncie is the closest graduate school that offers MA Degree in Deaf Education. It is my lifelong passion to work in the field of Deafness; I happen to be a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults) with fluency in American Sign Language.
Muncie is my only choice. I need to live halfway between Muncie and Indy due to my job at Indiana School for the Deaf beginning in August.
I have been seriously thinking about picking Fisher as my new home since Pendleton doesn't have that many nice, attractive apt. complexes. Carmel, Noblesville, and Cicero are little out of my price range since this is my first in teaching. Any suggestions about colleges/apartments in other towns?

Crazy thought, but wouldn't it make a whole lot of sense for Ball State to move their Deaf Education program to downtown Indy to be near the state school for the deaf? Wouldn't that make it a lot easier for students to have practical, hands on experience?

There are a couple nice complexes in Fishers just a stone throw away from I-69. Sunblest are the biggest complexes and there is another sizeable one between 106th & 116th ... can't remember the name, but you can see them from the interstate.
Best of luck to you!

Pendleton has a more sophisticated/historic feel to it than most other small towns between Muncie and Indianapolis and there are apartments there. I know there are some near the Indiana 38 and I-69 interchange. If interested in Pendleton, you might want to contact a realtor. Since you are planning to rent, you might want to take a look at Anderson. There are a lot of apartments on the southside of Anderson near I-69. They should be very affordable and while run down, Anderson isn't dangerous and it doesn't sound like you are in the market to buy.
You will probably have traffic problems no matter what option you choose. If you live in Pendleton or Anderson the commute to Ball State would be easy as long as the commute starts there - there are a lot of other routes to BSU other than I-69. The trip in to the deaf school in the morning would be a bear, but even if you would live in Fishers, it would still be a problem, because the big bottle neck is from Fishers to I-465. There are a couple of optional routes you might look at which would be easier to access from Pendleton rather than Fishers.

Noblesville is really pushing for the upscale "village" atmosphere and has some lovely (mature treed) neighborhoods. I don't live there, but do hear nice things and the advertisements I hear/read tend to be interesting-sounding businesses.

Mitch - I would concur with the other posters about Pendleton, but I also think your idea of looking into Fishers is a good one. It would be easy to get onto I-69 and head to Muncie, and you're close to stuff you want in Broad Ripple and downtown Indy.
