The entirety of marion county is Indianapolis and the school districts, other than the Indianapolis Public Schools are called Township Schools. There are independent school districts in marion county ... Southport and Beech Grove. The main Township school systems (and I know I'll miss some) are Warren, Washington, Pike, Franklin and Lawrence. They are public school systems ... Lawrence uses a magnet school system where you apply to a school via testing. Not sure what others do. I have a friend who went through all the rigamarole with Lawrence twp and her kids are miserable. I personally think that Washington Twp schools are good.

As far as cool places to live in Indy:
Broad Ripple (fairly affordable, interesting but smaller homes, more liberal vibe. Bungalows and foresquares, from $160,000-$400,000)
Meridian-Kessler (next to Broad Ripple, large, much more expensive homes tending toward brick tudors or colonials. $350k-1million)
Downtown - Expensive
Old Northside - rehabbed older homes on the upswing, more of the urban pioneer phase. Fairly pricey.
those are my faves. For family living, I'd vote for Broad Ripple or Meridian-Kessler.
Schools are hit-and-miss at best.

Thats a loaded question. Dont live anywhere within the I-465 beltway, especially the East side (its almost all bad). Indy has an eclectic range of neighborhoods. You will have to do the research to know what type of neighborhood fits your taste. My personal taste is the far southside (Franklin or Perry Townships) or the far northeast side (Castleton), but thats just me. As far as schooling goes, avoid sending children to Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) at all costs. IPS is the worst district in the state and among the worst in the country. The township school districts fare much better, as well as the numerous private/parochial schools in Marion County.

Avoid the east side and most places within the I-465 beltway. Almost the only "good "places inside I-465 is the far south side in Perry Township and the far north side, north of 71st. Probably the best and maybe most affordable place to live and raise a family in Marion County is Perry and Franklin Townships in the far south. Pretty much all of Indy's suburbs in the surronding counties are excellent places to raise a family: Greenwood, Franklin, Plainfield, Avon, Brownsburg, Zionsville (a bit pricey), Westfield, Noblesville, Carmel (really pricey) and Fishers. They are all a bit boring, but very safe and withing very close proximity to the city.
