I'm actually going to be a PhD student at IUPUI. That's just the area I was looking at, it's not too late to change my mind if I need to though. Should I live somewhere else? Where are the better parts of town?

And thanks for the advice about the coat. I've already got a nice heavy peacoat, but I was going to swing by REI because all of their nice winter gear is on clearance right now, and see what I can grab.

Any other advice?

The suburbs are the best places to live and generally within a reasonable commute. Plainfiled, Avon on the west are good for commuting to IUPUI. Mooresville to the southwest is also excellent.

If you have to live inside the city limits, avoid the inner city. The northside has always been pretty good.

I have worked with a lot of people who have moved from all over the country to Indy, and they all seem pretty pleased once they get here.

Even some of the Arabs that have moved to the Indianapolis area are able to adjust to the colder temperatures with no problem and are quite pleased.

I have meet very few people who have not liked Indianapolis. Most of those were from the mountains and could not get used to the flat land. For a big metro area, Indianapolis is really one of the nicest cities. I always loved it there, but I didn't realize how nice it was until I moved away.
