Default Irvington - Your Help Needed

Hello,

I am moving to the area soon with my boyfriend. We have narrowed our home search (as of now) to two homes in the Irvington neighborhood. I was wondering if anyone could help answer some questions about the crime near these two houses?

1) 32 S. Butler Ave - house is beautiful, but I heard this area of Irvington is a little risky with crime from one person. Is this true? What types of crime if so?

2) 5602 E. Beechwood Ave - house not so great in terms of size and amenities, but if it is a much safer investment, then we will go that way.

For slightly more background info, we are in our 20s and do not have children. We are moving from Madison, WI. We like the house on Butler's aesthetics more, but we are worried we might be making a bad investment, so any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Irvington is routinely shredded by people who have never been east of Sherman Dr. or have never left their quaint suburban vinyl village. For the most part, if you are minding your common sense and taking the same precautions you would take anywhere you will generally be fine. There is not going to be a lot of difference between Butler and the house off Ritter.

The Irvington community is very involved; they have neighborhood festivals and such. It is a great community.

Thanks for the advice. I will take a reasonable amount of crime over living in a suburban vinyl village any day. :-)

As a suburban vinyl village dweller, my observation is that the homes north of Washington Street in Irvington generally seem a bit more well-kept. Crime-wise, I don't think there'd be much of an issue on Butler. You don't hear about much crime happening in that part of the Eastside. I always feel safe taking my family to Irvington for pizza at Jockamo's.

We have friends that have lived for decades on S. Downey and a single woman with a beautiful home on Julian. I would have to see the houses next to the one on Butler and see how close it really is to the Emerson corner but the area is full of interesting houses. Really the area is fine but being so close to Washington is the most concern. Is there something ok that "protects" it from the busy street? If there is a large home on Washington next to yours is it OK, as some are not in great shape or converted to small rooms.
