1 percent tax on beer in marion and 9 counties!
This story appeared from Indystar.com today and it says that Ballard is proposing a 9 county 1 percent sales tax increase that would benefit Indianapolis and 9 other counties. The 9 other counties can keep their amount and Indianapolis would be able to get the CIB out of a debt and still have money left over.
My question is what do you think? I think that it is a good idea and woudn't affect anyone really. I mean we tax smokers so I don't think that taxing drinkers is going to affect them. They won't care. Someone though however will blow this way out of proportion. We could be like Nashville, TN and tax the **** out of Tourists and then offer more tourist destinations. But of course that won't happen!
What do you think?

I think we should institute a 15% pro sports tax. This is a state tax on incomes of professional athletes and employees of the teams that operate in Indiana. The money is put towards operating, maintaining and future construction of any facilities that are state/locally constructed and supported.
If a pro sports franchise wishes to operate/construct their own facility, then they would be exempt from the tax.
The pols need to quit stickin it to the citizens to support private business, where the only qualification for that tax support is because they are in sports entertainment.

I think the sooner they do this, the better. Too bad the alcohol lobby is so strong and will fight this tooth and nail.

Alcohol taxes have not gone up since something like 1973 in Indiana - so it is time

I agree the taxes need to be risen. I hear that soft drinks are also going to be taxed but that is going to be a national thing. So expect the price of soft drinks to go up as well.

The problem I have with going straight to tax increases is that we really don't know the extent of the problem just yet. For one, the Pacers' lease has yet to be renegotiated, so we don't know for sure how much CIB will have to take on (although admittedly, it looks like the whole $15 million at this point). Secondly, it's expected that additional revenues will come once the convention center expansion is complete next year.
I would much prefer that we find a quick fix to get the CIB through the next year (Like, say, the idea someone proposed of using the huge sum of cash being hoarded by the township trustees as security), then put together an ad hoc committee ala Kernan-Shepherd to find a long-term solution that is comprehensive, creative and fair.

I don't have a huge problem with the added tax, although there is a fundamental difference between taxes on alcohol and taxes on cigarettes. Many people who smoke are addicted and will continue to buy cigarettes regardless of how high the price goes, up to a point. And the tax on smokes is partially justified on the argument that smokers cost taxpayers money in the form of added healthcare costs, although there are some flaws with that argument.
For most drinkers, beer is discretionary, so there's no real reason to tax beer and not, say, soda. "Don't like it? Quit buying coke" wouldn't go over very well, I'm afraid. But in any event, my problem is with what the revenue is going to be used for. This tax could have been levied years ago to help replace our inadequate sewer system, or for any number of other purposes that would help the average citizen more than this CIB bailout.
