We may be moving to Indianapolis and want an apartment near Brown Mackie College. We'd like to be in a good neighborhood, downtown, within five miles or so of Brown Mackie. Our preference is a downtown area with cultural activities, restaurants, and walking trails. Suggestions?

St Agnes is 3 or 4 doors down from Mackie. It's managed by Stallard and Assoc which have properties further north too. One of Zender's buildings is across the street but I wouldn't recommend them. I looked at those apts. and it was not well kept. I looked at some of their other properties also and they were all the same. I lived at St Agnes for a year and liked it. No problems with noise and I felt safe. Gated parking and secure entry. Not the best area as there is a soup kitchen across the street and I mean no offense to the poor or homeless. I have volunteered there and have had no problems while working there. You just have to be careful as you do anyplace else. Even though it's on a busy street it's not a place I would go out walking at night. I had a large studio and paid $475. If I felt like walking I usually drove to White River State Park. It's about a 10 min drive if I remember correctly.

Central Library is within walking distance and I walked to downtown a few times.

I'll warn you now so you don't waste your time: don't go near 38th St. I lived just a few blocks south of there and it was a year I want to forget. Prostitution, drugs, saw a woman being raped. Just don't bother. I was naive and thought all the stories were just that - stories.

I'm not too familiar with actual downtown apartments. From what I've seen most are condos and what aren't are very expensive. Canal Square Apartments are near IUPUI and just a few miles from Brown Mackie but are expensive: a 1 bedroom is about $800/month.

I can't think of any other apartments close by.
