Default Things to know before moving to Indy?

I'll be living in Indianapolis for a year finishing my Purdue (WL) degree at Methodist hospital. After searching for apartments, I picked one near College Ave/96th St. It is near Nora. Is that a pretty safe area? I have friends from North Central HS and Carmel HS who say it's pretty good. I know Broad Ripple is the place to be for people my age (I'm a 22 yr old single female), but I had trouble finding a decent place there. The suburbs were also a little too far from the hospital for my liking. I know that 38th St and the East Side of Indy are bad, but are there any other places I should avoid? I won't really know anybody in Indy, so are there any good places to meet people? I was interested in joining a health club/gym...any ideas?? Anything else I should know or places I should go? Thanks

When you get here pick up a copy of the free paper NUVO each Wedensday for activities. It will help you plan the week ahead. Lots to do and lots free. Make sure you come downtown for at least one parade. There are several other free papers given out downtown mostly that have ideas. Indianapolis Monthly magazine can be found at the library or bookstores and is fun to look thru and see what other ideas are there. We have a lot of parking.

Got downtown and check out the new library. From there you can walk downtown on Meridian Stree and enjoy some of the parks and check out the Monument on the circle.

86th Street runs all the way from east to west and has all the shopping you would need. 96th over east has some more. Check out Trader Joes (there are two on 86th Street.

You will find it easy to get to Carmel also, just a quick drive up College. So there will be many fitness places to choose.

I would also check out what Methodist bulletin boards/facilities have for ideas.

Dont know your interests but we have a lot of sports of all kinds, churches, several large ethnic cultural groups, State Fair on 38th in August, clubs, art groups, etc.

I like the Nora area. You have the monon, many shops and restaurants around and very close to Keystone and Castleton malls. You can also go a straight shot to Downtown on College or Meridian. That's a great area!
