job marketing for new business grads in Indiana (marketing)
Edit: Sorry i meant to say in the title "job market for new business grads in Indiana"
I graduated from IUPUI in 2007 and have wanted to stay in the indianapolis area to work, but feel as though I may need to move, although the job market is tough everywhere. Is it me or does Indianapolis not have very many marketing (especially entry level) positions available? The only time I get an interview is for some insurance company, who will interview just about anybody, or some door to door sales job (not a legit sales job with at least a small salary or reputable company). I have a bachelors in Marketing but no internship experience, but I should at least be able to get an entry level job. I am about ready to give up and go back to school for something else--thinking IT or maybe even getting certified to teach ( i know, two totally different fields).
What is the best way to get your foot in the door here in order to get a marketing position (like marketing assistant, account manager, etc.)?
Is the job market for Marketers really that bad here??
advice, please and thank you...

In this economy, you need to be willing to move. You could could get lucky and find a rep position in Indy, but with a company that's elsewhere. One of my housemates during the Bush I recession of the early 90's, who is an IU marketing MBA had 1 job offer in Atlanta, so she took it. I experienced the same thing, over 200 resumes, 3 job interviews, 1 offer, fortunately, in Chicago, but still, I was applying for jobs all over the country.
I'd expand your job hunt. Look at it like a 2 year adventure. Oh to be young and mobile again ... sigh.

So you are saying the job market in Indianapolis is pretty much dead altogether except for insurance salesmen?

Possible, I think so, but I am no expert. I have a co-worker who has a degree in Medical Assisting and that is one of the fastest growing professions but she cant get hired anywhere, much less an interview. Sorry I know that is not encouraging. However, I do know that we do not have a double digit unemployment rate like some places (las vegas, for example).

I just think that the best strategy is to make yourself mobile, if that's possible. If not, be prepared to wait.
