Default Things to do in Indy (for a couple that's on a budget)?

My fiance and I are going to be stopping in Indianapolis for 1-2 days around our anniversary in August. We are trying to come up with some inexpensive but fun things to do while we are there. Any recommendations of what to do or see while we are there? Places to eat? Etc?

What sort of things do you like? You go to the top of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument for a dollar. It is free to wander along the canal. You can probably find all kinds of food, food we've talked on many times before on here.

Thanks for the reply. Do you happen to have the links to the threads where you talked about places to eat?

We like outdoorsy things ... we are going to go a little ways off from Indy to go hiking at some parks. We might check out the art museum, too.

What types of food are you interested in? I don't have the links, something someone can search for, I lack the motivation.

If you like Thai food, there is Siam Square in Fountain Square. Boogie Burger in Broad Ripple has great burgers; as does Peppy Grill. Squealer's on west 86th street has great BBQ, Smokehouse on Shelby is good too. Smokehouse has the old Fountain Diner menu as well, burgers sandwiches etc.

Pizza, you have Jackamo on East Washington Street; Maria's in Fountain Square. Bazbaux gets a lot of hype as the best pizza in Indy; but I have never been impressed with Bazbeaux. Actually, I rather don't enjoy Bazbeaux.

Greiner's on South Shelby has good subs. Garfield Park is not too far away, the sunken gardens are pretty to walk around.

If you want cajun, we have Yats and Papa Roux. I like both.

There is a good Caribbean place called Da Blue Lagoon near 52nd and College.

We also have all the standard chains, all over town.

If you are into art, you can also check out the Broad Ripple Art Center. I think it is free, or very cheap. There are some galleries in Fountain Square as well, most of them free to browse.

while downtown you can also go to the Indiana War Memorial. It has a small museum in it and it truly is one of the hidden treasures of Indy.

Another favorite of mine is walking along the canal. My children love feeding the ducks there.

And since you like hiking there is the Fort Harrison State park on the Eastside of Indy: Fort Harrison State Park, an Indiana State Park

Quote:
Facilities include:

* Bicycle Trail
* Cultural Arts Programs
* Fishing
* Hiking Trials / Multi-use Trail (paved)
* Fort Harrison Golf Resort & Conference Center
* Harrison House Suites & 3 Officer's Homes
* The Garrison Dining, Meeting & Conference Facilities
* Golf Course / 18 holes & Driving Range
* Nature Center
* Naturalist Services
* Picnicking
* Picnic Shelters
* Shelter Reservations
* Saddle Barn w / Horse Trail Rides, hayrides
Personally I have never been there as currently I am checking out different state parks outside of the Indy area.
