Gay or Gay Friendly Doctor
I have recently moved to Indianapolis, and am looking for a doctor (just a general practioner) that is either gay or gay friendly. I've checked the rainbow chamber of commerce, but havent had any luck. Any ideas out there?
Thanks!

Wow, that's a tough one! I'm not certain that a physician in Indianapolis would specifically state that they are gay friendly ... do you have friends who like their doctors??

Besides, under medical ethics, aren't doctors required to care for patients regardless of sexual orientation?

Having just moved to Indy, I've been more focused on work than building a social life, and the few people I do know here dont have health insurance, therefore dont go to the doctor!
And yes, I guess doctors are required to care for patients regardless of sexual orientation (among many other things). However, doctors are human beings and carry with them their own sense of values and bias.... and trust me, there are definitely doctors out there who are not gay friendly.
Thanks for the replies!

My suggestion (assuming you're gay)......go to the local gay clubs/hang outs and ask around.

Please don't take our responses as attacks or us being dismissive. I did a little digging and found this website with a search engine ... maybe this will lead you in the right direction. I wish you the best of luck:'

It's easy to find out if the doctor is gay friendly or not. Find the best doc you can and when you meet him or her, ask straight out "Are you Gay friendly?"

you know, I would really like to think that, but you've got a gamut of right wing wackos and left wing nuts in the medical profession who wouldn't hesitate to preach you the merits of Christianity or the right to contraceptives (among other things).
Best of luck to the OP, sorry I couldn't be any help.

If you want to feel safe and secure about a gay-friendly doc, you could check Bloomington or at least contact the Bloomington GLBT chapter(s) - someone would have a recommendation for Indy, I'm sure.
And, just have to say, to casualsurfer... open your mind about Christians, friend. Really.

Ok
I can tell all of you this much STAY AWAY FROM WISHARD HOSPITAL!
Now there is a Gay Dr who cares for in a very descrete way mind you in Indianapolis
his name is Dr. Andrew Anderson. He treats Gay lesbian and transgendered patients.
Last known office was behind a Lesbian Bar in Indianapolis called "The Ten" 1330 N. pennsylvania street. He may not be there anymore last time I was there looked like business wasnt doing so well.
But you can try.
As for Wishard, lets just say im in worse shape today then before I ever steped foot in there hospital, I do not think they are GLBT freindly, if you are on the Advantage plan be ready to wait months between Dr visits, important testing, and wait even longer for if ever to get test results. If you do get results be ready to here they didnt find anything if you are unable to pay, if you know what I mean.
