Places to live close to Lilly
Hi,
I am a young, single guy moving to Indy from Chicago and have been going thru the posts on this site. By now I know Broad Ripple (and surroundings) is a nice area to live in but would like some more suggestions for a 1 BR place that can be close to Lilly Tech. center on kentucy ave.
Haven't been lucky to find anything close to downtown. Does anyone have any suggestions in the downtown or on the south. 15-20 minutes drive will be fine and will prefer to stay within $ 800. Needless to say that it should be safe neighbourhood (with descent if not lot of activity). Is there really any option other than BR and Downtown?
Thanks

There is almost nothing around lilly's camplus on Kentucky. It is all industrial. Fountain Square and Fletcher Place are the two neighborhoods you might like which are closest.
15-20 minutes can get you to Broad Ripple, northern Greenwood, I65, etc. I would also call Buckingham Properties who control some apartments downtown and are renovating the Ambassador next to the main library. It would be a choice location downtown. They also have the Plaza across the street and the Richelieu off Mass Ave. The prices shown for the Richelieu might be in your range.
The Ambassador has been closed for a number of years during the library construction so it may not yet be ready but the leasing signs are up. Broad Ripple is short of apartments but there are some and it may take some leg work.
Husband says Lilly has an Employee Assistance Program for employees who might help with such a search. Did not know if you were an employee or contractor.
My first choice would be downtown, second around BR, third northern Greenwood. I live downtown and love it and have found it quiet, friendly and very interesting. You might want to come to Alabama and around 11th, St. Joseph neighborhood, and park the car. Walk around. Apartments on 9th, Alabama, Central, Mass Ave, Park Ave, East Street. All within walking distance. Henry's coffee shop is on East Street only 4 or so blocks away and a nice walk. It is in the neighborhood called Chatham Arch neighborhood. The Ambassador is only about 3 blocks away as is the new library.

If you are young and single and from chicago i will make a few assumptions and guess you would prefer a living style that caters to the city life. One question are you set on an apartment or house or does it matter. If i were you i'd think about fountain square area, some of the downtown high rise apartments (not sure about the price on those) some of the new neighborhoods that have been recently brought up are looking pretty nice. Also if 15 minutes is ok for you one area that i know will be in your price range and have some cool older homes is irvington but you need be mindful about which street in irvington because they can be hit or miss. I do not know much about the west side so i wont comment on what i don't know. Finding the right dwelling in this city kind of depends on which style of living suits your taste, if you prefer more urban areas then the ones i just named off would be best, along with a few other examples provided by others, but also if you want suburbia that wont be very hard to obtain either because we have plenty of those type of homes also.

I'm also looking into housing in the downtown Indy area. Occasionally, there will be ads on Craigslist or places that are near Lucas Oil stadium, in the area Google Maps has marked as Babe Denny. Does anyone know if this area is relatively safe? For example, one of the places listed there now is at 909 S. Missouri Street (barely north of the 70).
