Your commute would most likely be I65 from the Northwest part of town. It has been rebuilt and is a smooth ride most of the time. The exit for the hospitals is a pretty straight shot off Dr. MLK Drive. Like any interstate, an accident can clog it up but there are usually enough exits to get off and use the surface streets like Michigan Road to get home. Lots of development in the Zionsville 334 area have caused an increase in traffic but the road seems able to handle it. Pull up mapquest and you will see the route downtown.
I would avoid living too close to Lafayette Square, but up closer to 71st, 86th, etc are busy with new stores, new interstate exits and lots of nice things.
Trader Joes is close to 86th and Michigan, Traders Point Creamery and the organic farmers market are in that corner of town. Much improved in the last 5 years.

Trader's Point Creamery is the coolest! Took the kids there for a family fieldtrip and had a wonderful time!

thanks for your tips.. Looks like we are going to put a bid on a place off off 62nd and Michigan..
Looks like the easiest way is to take Michigan Ave the whole way to the hospitals. Is this not the best way?

What do you mean by ghetto? I would look at each school on an individual basis. I dont think the poster even mentioned schooling needs, sounds as if they were speaking of work. My child happens to go to a school in Pike that is a 4 star school, rated each year with some of the best teachers. It has a rating of 10 on greatschools.net and each year hundreds of teachers from all over the country train at this facility. I would however say that other schools are more questionable. There are ghettos in every area but Indianapolis doesnt have a real ghetto, if you are well traveled and have been other places.
If you desire not to live near ghetto dwellers, so be it. But I dont think in a suburban pocket close to the urban city is hardly ghetto.

Some of the individual schools in Pike are good academically, but overall, I wouldn't place it in the top schools in the state.
My step daughter (blond, heavy set) was sexually harrassed incessantly at her Pike Middle School...so badly that she moved in with us from her mother's place to get away from it. That was about 10 years ago, however. Maybe things have improved?

I don't know what you mean.
I visited Pike High School for a state-wide academic event and that place is loaded. Also I am a Black man, and when I was in college in Indiana, one of my friends (who is also Black) got teased by others for being 'privileged' because he went to Pike.

Pike is a good place to live!
Both of my kids have gone through Pike School system and I'm very pleased. I've tried to be a good neighbor and the families that live around me are good neighbors!

That 4 star school must be Fishback, an elementary school but the high school gets worst every year and by the time your child is ready for 9th grade.....also the privileged thing is true because you could be in IPS or some other crappy school system but w/e
