Living in Indy
So I'm thinking about going to school in Indianapolis (IUPUI) and my mom is concerned that myself, along with my (also female) roommate, will not be safe. I understand that two young women living on their own is never the most ideal situation, but she is so concerned with the area. We have lived about an hour north for many years and I feel that Indianapolis is a generally safe area and I'm not too concerned, but I would love to hear opinions from other people.

Honestly, the only people I know who think Indianapolis is a generally scary place; is people from places like Crawfordsville and Bedford. No offense. Parts of Indy are scary, but certainly not all of it, and probably not even the majority.
As far as the area around IUPUI, it is a generally safe area as far as urban areas are concerned. Ransom Place is a great little neighborhood right by campus, and there are many apartments in the area as well. Downtown Indianapolis is generally safe throughout, any safety issues would be minimal.

I don't think you'll have any problems finding a safe place to live. Just be smart and do a little research and then be really smart and aware when you start living there

Your mom should get out of the house more.

As downtowns go, Indianapolis is much safer, in my opinion, then most other cities. Cleaner too!
The area around IUPUI always seems pretty safe to me.
Just be smart and know your surroundings. (This goes true for anywhere)

No kidding. Indianapolis isn't exactly what I'd call a city to stay away from in terms of downtown living. But then again, I live in Chicago all by myself ... at least you'll have a roommate.
Sounds like your mom doesn't want you to leave her.
Whenever I have to go to Riley Hospital, driving around IUPUI is very bustling .. lots of people walking around.

I can tell your mother has a small-town way of thinking. The truth is Indy is a safer city and has lower crime than most, although not without its problems or bad areas. But all cities and all communities in America have crime. You cant totally avoid it. If I were you, find a safe neighborhood in the far south or far north or far northeast sides. Castleton and Greenwood are good area. Anything in Hamilton County is too expensive. Two good tips: dont live on the East side, and its best to avoid areas within much of the I-465 beltway (except for the far north side). Al in all, Indianapolis, though not without its share of problems, is not a bad city to live in at all. BTW, I attended IUPUI for a year and liked it a lot. Best of luck.

That is a little extreme, isn't it? There are plenty of good areas inside 465 not located on the precious north side.

Youch, this is very extreme. There are plenty of good neighborhoods within the beltway, and some not-so-good neighborhoods outside of it. And the Eastside has some of the classiest neighborhoods in the city, as well as some of the roughest. But I would never avoid it entirely.
I have a relative with IMPD and he says the worst area in the city these days is outside of I-465, around Post and 38th Street. Just two miles north of that is the nicely redeveloping, middle class area around Fort Ben. It's all relative.

Yeah what happened to the area along Post from 42nd to 38th street. I'm a little leery of just driving through that area during the day. Didn't seem so bad until the past 5 years or so
