Default Best places to eat in the area

Ok, so the wife and I are headed up to make Indy our new home. I dont want to do one of those boring "What part of town blah blah" posts because there are already about a dozen or so that I have read on here but...

I need to know where the best food is! We are going to be living in the Fishers/North East area but I have noooo problem driving for distance if good food is involved

Best place for BBQ (if you guys even have it???)

Best place for Mexican

Best Sushi place (this one might be the most important)

Best Irish/English pub (A man needs his Guinness)

Best Dive Bar (A man needs his smoke filled rowdy joint)

Best Italian

Help me out natives!

1) BBQ - the best ribs are at Scottys. Best overall BBQ place is Famous Dave's

2) Best for Mexican is La Piedad in Broad Ripple

3) Sushi, bar, dive bar - I don't know

4) Italian - so many great Italian places. Mama Carolla's is my favorite

My ladyfriend's sister loves the sushi at Ocean World at 86th and Ditch. There is a new sushi place in Broad Ripple that is supposed to be good as well; but as someone who does not eat sushi I can not confirm or deny that.

Squealer's on West 86th has real good BBQ.

My personal favorite Italian place is Iaria's at Fletcher and College on the southernern fringe of downtown.

Irish Pub - Golden Ace Inn near East Washington and Rural. Nice little place in a rougher area. Claddagh Irisg Pub is downtown and if memory serves, there is one in northern Marion or Hamilton County. They are opening an English Pub on Virginia Ave in Fountain Square; it is not open yet but I have high hopes for it.

Concur with the recommendations of Squealers and Iaria's. I don't know enough about sushi to comment. As for Mexican, I prefer Cancun.

This is all you need to know when it comes to Irish in Indy. Don't go in expecting a commercial "Irish" experience. Forget fish and chips. You're lucky to get a cheeseburger. This is definitely a dive bar. It is, however, the only truly Irish bar in Indy. Meaning, a lot of the clientele are from Ireland. Pat Grant is not one to be missed. He has a phenomenal voice and can often be found singing and hanging out at the GA.

As for BBQ, forget the Scotty's recommendation. GT South's is decent and so is Squealer's. Overall, though, it's not a great city for BBQ.

There is a lot of great Mexican in this city at this point. On any side of town.

Italian? Eh. I think Mama Carolla's is a tad overrated. Augustino's on the south side is just as good, IMO. Again, this is not the city for great Italian food.

Sushi? You'll be fine on the north side.

Dive bar? I have a ton of favorites, but I don't know of any in the Fishers area and in your drunken dive bar condition, you shouldn't be driving.

You did say best food. I loved L'explorateur and Elements. They are both closed now. There aren't a lot of foodies in this city. R Bistro is excellent, as are 14 West and Meridian.

For breakfast, I like the Patachou joints.

I've never understood people's support for this place. It's mediocre, in my opinion.

I'll agree with you Knox that it's tough to find good BBQ in Indy. Disagree on Italian, however. There are a ton of Italian joints in Indy, many are good.

The Journey on 96th is a buffet with many seafood dishes including a Sushi Bar. I dont know how to compare it because its the only place ive ever eaten Sushi. Last night there was 4 chefs creating about 20 different Sushi dishes and it all was fresh and delicious

Best sushi places: Izakaya ($$$$) and Asaka ($$) on the north side; Ichiban ($$$) and Yokohama ($$$$) on the south.

Journey is a neat place to go with a group, because everybody will be able to get something they want. Journey is a huge buffet, with American, Chinese, and Japanese cuisine featured. However, the sushi there is not the very best quality, because it's a buffet. It's not bad, mind you, but it's only slightly better than the typical quality you'd expect from a buffet (though MUCH more variety than is typical with buffet sushi. Much more to choose from than the usual California Roll).

Let me just add that if you've lived in TX all your life, I don't think you will find BBQ you will consider good anywhere in Indiana. Sorry...there's just a quantum difference between TX BBQ and Midwestern BBQ.
