Where do the single sophisticated professionals go in Indy/Carmel/Zionsville?
Where are the single upscale trendy professionals hanging out/getting together? I am over 45, fitness freak (ex-ballerina) and looking for more sophisticated mature individuals to build friendships with. Anyone have any
ideas? I'm a transplant from the east coast and love wine/dining out/horseback riding/golf. Not into using the dating sights or sitting in bars.

Rambone! How sweet ...yes; even "fella's" like you; the Narcissist - can form relationships. You just have to keep trying!! Perhaps a posting requesting where you might find other singles like yourself who like to have their pictures taken next to their prize trophy fisheees. I'm sure someone will respond!! *wink* *wink*

I would think the urban neighborhoods in north Indy would be more to your liking. Some neighborhoods like Herron Morton are a bit more rough-and-tumble still but generally changing for the better. The nightlife scene around Massachusetts Avenue in Chatham Arch is probably good for you. Broad Ripple is generally young and college-y, but the northern part of Broad Ripple (on the other side of the canal) has a much more relaxed vibe less likely to draw the meatheads. Irvington is a quieter scene but people of similar interests, probably a lot of educated fortysomethings without kids. Fountain Square is artsy but the crowd tends to be on the younger side--still probably not a bad scene.
As for the suburbs, Zionsville and downtown Carmel are your best bets, though this will skew heavily toward the married side. Might be a little Stepford Wife-ish as well.
Truth be told, the internet MeetUP groups may help if things seem a bit decentralized. Though I would shy away from referring to yourself as "sophisticated"--even if people completely understand and sympathize with your intentions, we humble self-effacing Midwesterners could easily interpret that as hubris... :-)

Much thanks Chalcedony your expose was just what I was searching for .... I am (as the written word does not always allow us to indicate) not as black and white as it may seem from the string (or should I say sting of postings regarding my request. "Midwestern" is not mutually exclusive to ignorant - no doubt! Just as educated is not mutually exclusive to a piece of paper labeled "degree". East coast women likewise can be quite self-effacing and humble notwithstanding their hubristic natures.... One (while reading any forum) must always consider that there is a sender and a receiver and the contextual features of each life dictates; quite often, how they both hear/say things....eh?
I'm desperately trying to remember since moving here.... "when in Rome - do as the Romans" I'm just having a very hard time trying to find a Roman that will accept a modified version of Ellie Mae Clampit. A bien tout monsieur!

whoa! Are you insinuating that midwestern women are nothing more than ellie mae clampett's? if you are, you will not win many friends here. if you present yourself as better than the rest of these <nose sniff> midwestern women, well best of luck to you.
There is a young professionals group that is very active in Indianapolis, you may want to check them out and leave us lowly plebeians here at city-data to our lowly lives and discussions. Good luck finding the patrician class that you so desire.

No domergirl....... it was tounge-in-cheek for moi. Come on here - lighten up! Ever heard of self-deprecating humor??? Re-read without your dark glasses on please. NO one presented themselves that way - not moi! Some of you perhaps need to get yourselves out of the equation while reading the posts!! Honestly............

Isn't it interesting though how some of the writers here view it from an downward up position....when the original poster (moi) didn't think, write nor ask that way? "Sophisticated" and "mature" refers to age and interest - not pseudo-class nor money. Funny how it was consistently misinterpreted. Perhaps this is a microcosm of what is happening (unfortunately again....) in our world. Why is it placed in such a black and white - "class" oriented position by so many still? Especially those that continue that focus when there IS/WAS not there in the first place? Now that's a discussion (civil please) that could be potentially world saving.
