Default It's Official...We're going to Indiana!

So DH got the word and we are transferring to Indiana. The work will be in Greensburg (Honda) but we are still thinking about Columbus, Shelbyville and some of the areas in the SE section of Indy outside 465. I was online looking at some of the new houses in the SE area and saw stuff in the Warren Township area that seem almost TOO affordable. What's the catch?
I am hoping to finish my degree and so I wasn't going to go back to work. So a lower priced house (for now) is appealing.

We are doing a preliminary house hunting trip this weekend.

Any input is appreciated and welcomed.

Thanks in advance

Warren Twp is a rough school district. They just arrested a student for raping another student in a stairwell ...

Indy/Indiana is a great place with friendly midwestern area. The catch is there is a glut of housing foreclosures. The housing market has tanked. Indy is not the place to buy a house as an investment. Appreciation is nil. At this time it is actually depreciating.

Yes, New Palestine looks like a nice area too. We are teetering and tottering back and forth from being closer to Indy to going to Columbus. I think I am leaning toward Columbus. It seems to have all the basic stuff you need except not as big. Oh well, in 3 days we'll be there exploring and getting a feel for it all. (along with all the Indy 500 fans, I forgot the race was this weekend....)

Can you point me to a source where I can read more about this situation? The housing market has also slowed a great deal here where we live, but it's more a situation of too much inventory (or at least that is what my realtor said.)

Hey Southern, I actually just got home from Columbus. Glad to see you are leaning toward the city. We had a great time today. Needed to get a response to inspection to the owners of the house we are buying. Anyway, I took my daughter to Kramer's kitchen for lunch ... great dive of a restaurant with good greasy food! Then we went over to the indoor play area at the Commons Mall (soon to be a hotel, but the playground stays, TYG!!! The downtown is very nice, there are vacant stores, but there seems to be a steady lunchcrowd and a lot of restaurants and stores. My daughter, who is 5, said while we were walking, "I like walking in Columbus". I did too. The old buildings are being kept up very nice ... it just felt like a real town to me, not the spit shiney new suburbs. I like that.

As for the foreclosure situation. Yes, it's here, that's for sure. We actually made some money on the sale of our house. Unfortunately, in the Indy area, the best you can hope for is to break even. There is a lot of inventory available, but not all of it is because of foreclosure. The indy area is a very transient area. People move in and out all the time, so at any given time, there will be a big inventory of homes available. You'll be able to tell what neighborhoods are foreclosure hoods ... just drive around.

Well, we come up on Thursday and the more I read about and research Columbus, the more I like it. I read about some walking trails and that appeals to us and they seem to have a decent park system. We currently live in Alabama and I didn't want to start dissin on Bama or the south, but one thing I notice is that they don't invest a lot in their communities. I mean I am used to decent libraries and parks etc (coming from Ohio) but down here those services are not a priority at all. Of course the property taxes down here are REALLY LOW! Like we paid $650 a YEAR when we lived in Pell City, Alabama. And we had a decent house.

Anyway, I am rambling, but I will try that restaurant. I love little dives like that. The greasier the better! Talking about greasy, we went to a restaurant in Memphis that deep fries their hamburger meat and it is SOO GOOD! (I thought it sounded gross at first)
It is especially good with a side of the chili cheese fries! It's a heart attack on a plate for sure.

Who knows, maybe we will be neighbors!

Cheers
