If you enjoy sports at all levels, you might consider a stop at the NCAA Hall of Champions.

A stop in the White River State Park is also worthwhile. Nearby is the canal. Last year we rented Segways near the Indiana State Museum. There are also bike rentals and pedal boat rentals in that area. I've read somewhere that gondola rides are available, but we've never done that. You can also take a carriage ride through the downtown area. We did that once when our kids were pretty young. It was okay.

Even though we only live an hour away we do sometimes spend a weekend in Indianapolis and stay downtown, usually if there is a weekend Colts or Pacers game we want to see. We've stayed at the Marriot, Omni, Embassy Suites, The Canterbury, Courtyards by Marriot. Even the Hampton Inn my daughter and I stayed at one night was fine. All are within easy walking distance of most attractions. We typically will stay some place that has a special offer going on or where we get reward points.

Downtown Indianapolis is very walkable. It's unlikely you will need a cab to get to most of the attractions unless you go up to Broad Ripple or want to go to the Speedway. It's also a pretty safe city downtown.
