Back in 2006 teachers in IPS worked without a contract. Just before Christmas of 2009 the teachers received a check for back pay for 2006. All teachers on the payroll as of August of 2008 were paid this money. However, teachers who have left the system (even though there were working for IPS in 2006) are not eligible to be paid.

The ISTA is fighting this for those teachers on the payroll at the time. It only seems fair that they are compensated.

While Eugene White pads the IPS palace downtown, those teachers who fought the good fight in the classroom get the shaft.

And yes, my wife is one of those who got shafted. She left IPS in June of 2008 because we moved. Looking back, had she signed a new contract that year and stayed on the payroll during August (even though she had no plans to return) she would have been paid.

Yes, it is a bunch of crap. And when you call the IPS office, you get a different story based on who answers the phone. One lady in payroll agreed with my wife when it came to her eligibility, but told her there is nothing she can do.

What is interesting is that last evening my wife talked to a former co-worker who did just as I described. She had intended to work in August of 2008. However, her husband got transferred from Indy so they moved near the middle of August...right before classes started. Although she never taught that school year, the fact that she was on the payroll at that time (she spent less than a week preparing her classroom) qualified her for payment.
