My son wants to buy an AirSoft gun but we are not sure if they can be used within city limits, unless at a designated firing range. Does anyone know if there is a law restricting the use of BB or AirSoft guns within Indianapolis city limits?

Thanks.

I'm curious too. Our new neighbor had a young boy who likes to shoot one in their backyard.

It is legal. If he goes to a park, there is an ordinance against it.

There are various laws that may affect the use of these items.

There is state law. The only state law that would really apply here is Criminal Recklessness. That would of course not apply if the kids were using the guns in a manner they are supposed to be used, and watching their backdrop (so someone next door planting flowers doesn't get hit).

After state law comes local law. There can be county, city, and/or town ordinances. I am not sure if country ordinances apply to areas within city or town limits. For an example, in Hancock County, county ordinance bans the shooting of firearms within 300 yards of a residence. I know Noblesville has (at least a few years back) a city ordinance that is much more strick. Within the city limits, you can't use _any_ device that fires a projectile: Sling shot, gun, crossbow, etc..
