spattman, I'm currently a graduate student here at IUPUI, and I disagree with your concerns and worries about the "lax security" here at IUPUI. The presence of IUPUI police is everywhere on campus.

There are plenty of call boxes around the campus where your daughter can call police if she needs to be escorted back to her dorm at night time.

There was only one rape incident on campus, as I recall, last year. Other than that, no other email bulletin was sent out to students about sex assaults or rape incidents.

I hope you let your daughter come to IUPUI with her great scholarship.

Crime stats are available and I don't think that IUPUI is all that dangerous. I live in the Herron Morton Place neighborhood which is much worse had haven't had a single problem. If you have Comcast they have a Police Blotter section that is on Local On Demand that has information about crimes in certain areas. It's pretty helpful. The #1 crime at IUPUI is theft. If your daughter leaves her book bag, laptop, etc. sitting alone, chances are that in the four to five years she might be there, she will be a victim. If she has a fancy "ride," complete with stickers that make it appear she has a costly radio system, she will likely be a victim of a vehicle break-in. If she leaves her GPS, Ipod, Laptop, purse, etc. in her car in plain view, chances are she will be a victim of a vehicle break-in.

There are about two or three robberies a year on campus. There are many more just off campus. There is a ghetto just north of campus, and those punks are constantly holding up the businesses up along 10th Street. There was recently a home invasion robbery in Lockefield Apartments, just north of campus. Girls had their 1st floor sliding door open, with the screen shut. Ghetto thugs came in, pulled out a gun, stuck it in one girls face, while the buddy made off with the nice TV and other things. Lockefield has robberies yearly. I would say three a year, if that? I heard that city police already got those guys who robbed the girls, so at least they are gone. If they bulldoze that Section 8 ghetto complex, it would help reduce crime in the area. By the way, all the robberies I know of happened very late at night, some even after midnight.

Default Since 2001

I have been attending IUPUI for 6 years now and I have never had an issue. The campus police will also escort you to your vehicle if you are worried. As far as night classes, there are many students who take night classes and we always walked in a group. I love IUPUI and would highly recommend it! If you have any other questions I would be glad to answer.

My camera was stolen last week while I was in the University Library at IUPUI. It was stolen from my bag while I was away from the reading table for a few minutes. Uff...and it was an expensive one... We were only three people in the room, two guys and I. The other guys were also students. One of them was also a thief :-( I wonder what was his major....

sorry to hear about that but as someone posted before not a good idea to carry really expensive stuff on you.

IUPUI was pretty safe for me when I attended school and worked there from 2003-2010.

that whole area is kind of safe, IMO even areas around lockfields garden as the entire campus and it's numerous hospital surroundings are heavily patrolled.

Keep in mind IUPUI is right near the heart of downtown which is a lot more upscale than the surrounding areas. Like once you cross the White River heading west on Michigan St or 10th St you'll see there's a pocket of run down neighborhoods of poor surrounding a police department.

Probably the worst things I hated about the west downtown side of Indy that IUPUI is located is that it's always caught in crossings of every marathon, a Indy 500 speedway event, a race for the cure that have cops blocking off and detouring every street that usually stretch from West St down town all the way to Lynhurst near i465.

So someone you knew stole your camera. That has nothing to do with security.

Oh, and those 500 signs in the library that say "if you love it, don't leave it" are there for a reason.

Don't send her there! She will most certainly be rape or murdered. Bad things happen downtown.
