Hi all,

On my PC I will be without a virus system for a few days (until I reniew).
Now my question is.....If I only go the reptable and sites which are secure (nothing dodgy), what are my chances of getting a virus?

Thanks in advance

Dave

You may have better experts here than myself but I personally would not go on the internet or check email without the virus protection....

Your virus software is still protecting your system, the subscription only provides new virus definitions as they are developed, which is quite frequently.

The only thing you would be susceptible to are new threats discovered since your subscription expired, but with a little common sense in your surfing habits, your should be fine for a while.

Im no expert but I dont see a reason to pay for any virus program when you can find free ones that work just as well.

I think the average time for an unprotected computer on the internet to remain uninfected is still like four minutes, so without even a firewall, I wouldn't go online. If you have a firewall up and with working AV but with old virus definitions, you're quite a bit safer.

That is for an unpatched version of the OS. If your drive crashed and you reinstalled the original version of XP, and connected directly to the internet (no router) then yes it will catch something in a minute or so.

Install from an XP SP2 or 3 install disk and you will be a lot safer. The real question is why would anyone ever connect directly to the internet, a router by default drops all inbound unsolicited traffic.

If I was waiting to renew, I would dl and run free anti-virus software.

AVG free is almost as good as the pro version
