It seems I can't go more than a couple of weeks with out some stupid new update to quicktime and itunes. Enough already.

Sorry. This is more just a rant than anything else.

Not sure about those two but with most software a lot of times they are security patches or bug fixes. Any software package is always going to have some bugs and exploits.

Just turn off the auto-update function, or set it to longer durations between checks.

I agree with the OP and it is one of the reasons I don't use it as a Media Manager. Go WinAmp!

I don't use anything "Apple" for many reasons but mainly due to their software!
Way too domineering imho, plus whole bunch of unnecessary startup services, processes and updates, it is insane.

Even if you are not paranoid or concerned about privacy, that much Internet bound activity gotta make a rational, tech savvy person uneasy.

I use WMP to listen to CDs and MPs, all Internet based features and functions disabled, if it is working fine, no updates should be needed/installed. A media player should not even need to connect to Internet, play the damn songs and that is it.

I won a 30GB iPod at a former job some years back and gave it to a close friend without even using it.

I've quit using itunes, and the downloads were part of it. Seemed like every few days there was a new 100MB download it would annoy me about.

I upgraded everything to itunes plus, moved my library to windows media center, and dumped apple.

My ipod was rarely being used so I no longer had any real need for it. I got tired of all the glitches with the ipod (it would freeze up, have glitches in the middle of a song, etc. . .) and started using my phone as my portable media player.

I hate all the software that installs auto updates ala itunes/quicktime/realplayer etc..... Don't mind when installing the software it asks you do you want to automatically check for updates, but when it does it without warning you.....

Apple Software has and always will be terrible IMHO. They are worse than M$ when it comes to telling you what they want you to have vs what you actually need.
For my Nano I use Podo I think its called (dont have it here at work).

Anyway try this The unofficial guide to installing iTunes 10 without bloatware | ZDNet

There have been many new iTunes devices introduced in the last month, like the new Apple TV and the new iPod Touch models. These updates are needed to make those work. Also there are some new video rental options being added to the iTunes store. In order to make content rentable, the software had to be updated.

Apple has to be careful not to push the software in advance of new features and products, because it keeps secrets close to the vest and it knows that some people like to sift through the code in the application updates and figure out what's coming out next.

I take TurcoLoco's point a little further. On a Windows machine I treat Apple software as a virus.
