I have Gmail and use both Firefox and Internet Explorer to launch it.

When I click on an item, it takes literally 30+ seconds for Gmail to respond, so, for example, it takes me over 30 secs to open one single email. Then I click "reply" and wait another 30 seconds. This happens with all of the functions. I can't take it anymore.

I know Gmail wouldn't be so popular if people had to wait to do their clicking.

I have a Toshiba laptop with Vista if that matters. My AOL and yahoo emails work smoothly, and all other applications work properly without lagging.

What could be causing this? Please help!

The fact that the issue occurs under different browsers might indicate an issue with the computer, the operating system or an external cause, like your ISP or your DNS server.

1. Do you have the same slowness when you try it under a different user account on the same computer?

2. How about from a different computer on the same Internet connection?

3. Does the same thing occur when you use the laptop at a public wifi hotspot using a different Internet provider?

These answers will help narrow down whether the issue is specific to (1) your user account on Vista, (2) your computer or (3) your ISP/DNS server. If the answer is no to any of them, then the corresponding item for that number is where the likely culprit resides.

I realize this is a basic Q, but is gmail something that is downloaded or just a web-access mail system?

I only have one user account

I only have one computer in the house.

I have never tried a public wifi connection.

My cell phone does access gmail, but I have never tried to send anything from it.

Gmail is web based email. It can be accessed with software, like Thunderbird, but most people prefer to access it on the web or with a phone.

Gmail works fine for me. In fact when I email someone who uses gmail also, I get instant response. I can practically chat with another gmail user - it works so fast!

I have noticed the same issue on occasion, on more than one computer, on more than one internet connection, it just seems to hang for a bit, so your not alone.

Don't really care for Gmail, something about the interface, I just don't like it but also I use Yahoo for my everyday e-mailing. However, I still use Gmail on occasion to check on my Google voice-mails and it seems to about the same speed as Yahoo for the most part.

It lags more at work due to web filtering firewall and AV Web scanner but at home with a crappier DSL connection, it is always faster so the related security programs and web browser in use on your machine might have something to do with it just as much -if not more- as your computer hardware, Internet connection type/speed, physical location and operating system.

Trying pinging mail.google.com:
1. Start
2. Run
3. Type cmd
4. OK
5. In the Command Line window, type ping mail.google.com
6. Press ENTER

The average latency (time=) should not be more than 30ms.
