I haven't seen this specific problem addressed: I had a simple post along the lines of sending thoughts to X family on the loss of a good person. I have my settings set to friends only yet someone who is not a friend saw the post - how is this possible?

If you posted on their wall, who can see that post is dictated by your friend's security settings. When I want to send something that I don't want others to see I send a Facebook message.

If you put it on the internet it is public. All someone has to do is take a screen shot of it, save it as a file on their computer and email it to anyone they desire. Furthermore, once you post something it is forever. It is saved on servers, on peoples computers and you never know when or where it could turn up. Something you post today may show up somewhere 30 years from now. If you don't want others to see it, don't post it.

Yep, the pretty much sums it up. Think before you post, not after it has gone viral on the internet.

As I posted, it wasn't serious - nice actually, just sending well wishes to the X family (it's not an uncommon name) - it was just odd to hear that someone had read it/known about it. I don't ever put anything too personal on FB, weather comments maybe, rant about taxes, LOL, etc.

I echo what bs1369 said....your settings only apply to YOUR wall, not your friend's wall. If they permit others to view what is posted on their wall, they are going to see what you posted.
