You have to be an idiot to think any social media site truly cares about your privacy. Seriously, the less they care...the more they make. Personally, I can't stand Facebook and barely joined last year after my buddies got on my A-- about it. I can't wait til Google Plus takes over.

I always wonder what is the big deal about facebook, and why people complain endlessly it - OK its a public forum, unlike this forum where its somewhat private. and there are lots of nosey people out there who like to check up on your facebook - so don't give them any ammo.

But Facebook is only the tip of Iceberg when it comes to Data Privacy - Every website you go onto uses Cookie to record, monitor all of your internet searching activity, law enforcement agencies can comb through every bit of private information when ever they want, much of it can be all traced back to your IP address. Your on your Facebook - and they have a oookie recording your web history, directly back to your name, no need to worry about IP address.

Imagine in the Future - Some nosey people might want to see every websearch you have ever made, or software might form a kind of profile based on your web activity - just to find out what type of person you are. Who needs an employee personality test.

Lets say your being investigated something by an Employer or the Law - they will start using smart phone location records, combined with searching activity - see what is going on in your mind, perhaps use psycologist to assist.

You can say nothing to hide, nothing to worry about - but still I'd bet most people would not like everyone to see their web history, personal thoughts etc.

Why does the media never talk about this, and focus on relatively minor issue like stupid facebook updates, or photos of someone drunk

It amazes me that people can't seem to understand FB or Twitter or City-data doesn't know ANYTHING about you you don't willingly post.
Don't want whomever to know whatever ? DON'T POST IT ON A PUBLIC SITE.
This is not Theoretical physics.
