I have alot of cassette tapes I want to put in mp3 format on my computer. Does anyone know how to do this in Windows itself? If have heard it can be done - just don't know what to look for in my Windows software.

It's slow and bothersome but just play the tape (in analog) to your computer to copy the recordings. THEN you can compress it into an mp3.

I agree that it is tedious but if it's the only recording you have of something and no other way to get a decent mp3 file of it, go for it. I used audacity software, downloaded for free to transfer recordings from cassettes to mp3 files.
I'm wanting to do the same thing, but my old cassette player doesn't seem to have the 'line out', so am trying to locate one to borrow for the purpose.
For the genius techs who read in this forum: are there any other options for getting this done?
Quiet room. Good microphone. Good speakers. Play the music and record it on the PC. I don't know how good it is, but there is a sound recorder under Accessories in Windows Programs.
Microphone? You can connect it directly to the computer. If the cassette player has a headphone jack you just need a cord with plug on each end ( size adapters if necessary) and connect the plug directly into the microphone or aux jack on the computer.
If it has RCA outputs they make RCA to mini jack adapters that cost about $4. Cords and adapters can be found at most electronic stores or online.
In any event the only thing you really need is a player with some type of output and the correct cords/adapters.
I am not specifically recommending that one. Just citing an example. There's a ton of them out there.
