A lot of it has to do with new standards, security, vendor change, language change, so on and so forth. It can be many reasons as to why they decide to change it.

Meh, it's just an office pool they have going. Make a change, then have some bot software scan a number of message boards to count the increase in the average number of ""emoticons appear in internet forums.
