It hardly ever follows the planned route anyways for a number of factors: weather, delays, traffic being the main 3.

not sure who told you that, but thats incorrect.

there are deviations when being vectored to the approach, and if the weather is too severe to fly over they will go around it, but they are following the routes between intersections as filed; traffic can be separated by altitude. what would be the point in filing a plan and not following it? might as well make all traffic CVFR if that were true.

Are you so naive tot think that if somebody has the intention to hijack a train would base its information in a web site? Jeez!

Considering that the information found on airline tracking websites is extremely accurate it's not unreasonable to think there might be websites that do the same for trains.....

PS, I'm very interested to know if there's a way to track freight trains as well. I know freights have their own ID numbers that include the origin yard and destination yard as well ass the expected time of arrival, like Des Moines to St. Paul is DMSS. You can get one of those transistor radios or whatever and perhaps overhear yard workers spouting out the ID number or info about where trains are going. Rail forums will have the radio channels/frequencies for the rail yards.

There is no way to directly identify freight movements from a website, but there is a practice known as "ATCS monitoring", whereby both train movements and the actions of the dispatchers controlling them can be monitored and electronically displayed on a model that grew out of the Train Dispatcher simulation game, first developed about thirty years ago.

To start, you need a radio scanner set to monitor the communications between the dispatchers and the train crews, sometimes separated by hundreds of miles, The frequencies used by both "road" and "yard" bands are public knowledge, and there are a number of sites that monitor transmissions and stream them over the Internet -- just enter the term "railroad radio" into your search engine.

Actions to change the positions and aspects of remote-controlled switches and signals are transmitted in a specific code, as are the movements of trains at specific points and the reports of lineside defect detectors. As you monitor, you can develop a knowledge of exactly who is who, what is what, and where is where. and build a display which monitors and updates continuously, acting upon the coded input, but as previously pointed out, the display does not support direct identification of the trains' movements.

Here's a link to a very active Yahoo ATCS-monitoring group, plus a link to a site for Train Dispatcher (the game/sim) aficionados; don't let the first steps "snow" you:
