Is this protected by most common protections such as MSE, Avast, and so forth?

There are defences, though - ensure your browser is up to date, manually updating it if necessary.

You should also ensure that the 'anti-phishing' option is switched to 'on' in Firefox, Chrome or Internet Explorer, which will check for 'blacklisted' websites and prevent your browser being directed to the 'fake' version that delivers your bank statement.
As with most of these viruses there is no OS-X version (yet).

AV apps protect you against the nasties they have in their databases. These nasties are updated on an almost daily basis, so if you get hit with a new version that hasn't been included in your virus defenitions it's going to waltz right it and have it's way with your PC and you won't know it until it's too late. Todays anti virus apps are woefully inadequate.

Good. I think I'll try again to accept a free service like Avast or MSE. She still hasn't gotten the concept of "free," and that there must be some gimmick...
