Family and friends staying home and talking with each other for a change might be the next big improvement in our lives.

The kids like ooVoo. I'm sure cell phones will have an app for it some day.

There is an app for that.
That's not a social network, though.

How about this?

I believe diasapora may catch on, not as much as facebook of course, but it has a chance:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diaspora_(social_network)

You don't sign up directly, but you sign up via "pods" which you can either host yourself or join someone elses pod. These pods can interact with each other.

If you host your own pod, you have ultimate control over what information you send out. I think this will become preferable over facebook's questionable privacy decisions.

I've heard of gitune.com. It's new live video social network. It combines features and functions of many social networks.

You do realize the irony of posting this on a social network message board, right?

The OP is asking a fair question. Social networking allows people from all walks of life to connect. I know some people find the whole global village thing intimidating but it's here to stay, for better or worse. Furthermore, from a marketing standpoint businesses and consumers absolutely should stay on top of what the next big social network might be.
