We have friends who live in Southern New England but don't have
internet service yet.
They heard u-verse service was awful, one of their friends caught a awful
virus on their computer, and the internet speed was also slow
as molasses in their area.
Comcast, also, they found out is also very expensive after their "grace"
period & they plan on having internet service for many years, for they have
young children.
We heard good things about Cox cable but it is limited in what areas
you can get it.
Any suggestions on decent, affordable high speed internet in Southern
New England?

Getting an infection has nothing to do with your internet provider, you'll get them no mater who you use. If the same person that blamed u-verse for their infection was the one that said they are awful, I'd get some other opinions as this person isn't really knowledgeable in the tech department.

That's not true at all, they had NO problems whatsover with their computer before they switched to U-verse. The U-verse is very negligent in helping their customers, I've read on dozens & dozens of consumer complaints on the internet about U-verse!
It's just a fact, sadly enough. They advertise otherwise, but it's not true.....

While DSL with AT&T isn't that bad, it probably won't be half the price of these supposedly "high speed" internet connections, and people DO tend to get more viruses on Broadband internet.

It is 100% true. That's the usual types of assumptions made by people who don't understand how computers or the internet work, they change something, a bit later something goes wrong, so that change (such as changing internet providers), MUST be the cause. U-verse is not infecting their customers computers, and they are under zero obligation to assist anyone with an infected computer, they provide internet service, they are not tech support for an individuals unrelated computer issues.

Exactly. They would have gotten the virus no matter what ISP they were using.

Could you be more specific ? "Southern New England" sounds rather nebulous, could mean Conn. or Mass. or ?
I wouldn't know if I had a suggestion, without narrowing down location of where the service/market area is.
