In reply to the title question, many Yahoo accounts were closed by Yahoo earlier this year when they returned millions of dormant user names to the pool of names available for new accounts.

Oh, yes.
I use Yahoo and gmail for fairly unimportant stuff, and have an MS Hosted Exchange email account for "real" emails.
