I put exactly one disc in my queue and it's there in the queue. But there's no indication it has been shipped or not. Shouldn't it tell you? Or do I have to do something more?
I went to Your Account > See DVD Shipping Activity but there's nothing there.
Do they indeed notify you whenever they mail something?
You should get an email notification, and the disk will move from the queue, to a new section above the queue called "At Home" that includes a shipping date, and estimated arrival date.
It may take a day or so before they mail the first DVD.

It has plenty of detail. It says when it shipped and estimated date of arrival.
You don't put "1" disc in your queue though. You put many. Some take a long time to get or become unavailable. When that happens they go to the next one in the list.
If you just do one at a time you'll be waiting and waiting as likely or not.
And yes, sometimes DVDs disappear from a queue as they become unavailable entirely.

Nothing should disappear from the queue without explaining what happened.
They ought to show more tips like the points made in this thread.
They could also say whether the order is being processed or whether they are waiting for the disc to become available. There is a diff.
They have glitches, but you can lay the blame for a lot of them on the way copyright works and the rights to exhibit are bought and sold. Sometimes you just have to go with the flow and get something else or find who has what you want available. I've been trying to find Chayefski's "Hospital" w/ George C. Scott for a few years now. I've found a few other things I wanted in used VHS collections at garage sales and flea markets.
I agree we shouldn't have to "Go with the flow" when we are paying for this service. Netflix should let one know if the movie is available or not and then after adding to queue one should click "ship" and this will instantly give an estimated time of arrival based on time of day and shipping address location from the nearest netflix shipping site. This stupid herd mentality of "go with the flow just wait for days to be notified if the DVD is in stock" and if and when it will even be shipped is horrible customer service. My friend had netflix when they first started before they became popular and this was exactly how it used to work. Today's consumers are too complacent on the quality of service they receive which is why netflix does things like this and gets away with it, because no one complains about it because they are too lazy or stupid. Most of this stuff can be found for free anyway so if they want to provide crap service the market will decide and people will switch or go elsewhere to get what they want and are willing to pay for.
I used Netflix over 15 years ago and it usually worked well, but I experienced the same “short wait” or items being dropped altogether.
