I'll be traveling next month for about 3 weeks, part of it on a cruise, and I want to purchase a plan. Any suggestions?

You can probably do this on your phone. What phone? What provider?

Call Verizon. For around $20, I believe, you can add mobile hotspot to your phone and then stop the service after 30 days.
Are you going out of the country?

Depending upon how long you'll be out of the US; you'll want to look into a plan from a Mexican provider, get an international roaming plan, or do without.

US providers don't provide service in Mexico or Canada so you'll be in International Roaming, and the ship's provided cell service is considered special roaming as well.

Verizon currently charges $20.48 per MB for cruise ships, and $5.12 per MB for Mexico without a plan. With the international roaming plan you can get those down to $25 per 100 MB (in 100 MB increments).

Phone calls and texts are going to be very expensive as well.
