Advertisements

I saw this article today:

BuzzFeed’s Future Depends On Convincing Us Ads Aren’t Ads | TechCrunch

I don't want to be played for a fool. Do you?

Well this is off topic, but I clicked your link and then watched the Tidy Cat and Friskies ads and they were adorable.
Two of the best ads I've seen in a long time. But then I love cats.

I guess then the question would be... Did you like how you were "in the know" that those were ads and those products exist for purchase?

Of course I *did* know that both of those videos were ads because of the context in which I came upon the videos in that piece about BuzzFeed.

I use Adblock and Click to Flash, so I seldom accidentally run into an ad I don't wish to see. And. . . BuzzFeed is not a site where I'd usually choose to go.

Don't see what the big deal is, Rich. Not like they are LYING to you and saying this isn't the case.
So if Buzzfeed has to make money to give me all that great content for free, do I really care that Starbucks sponsored an ad? How is this "being played a fool?". Because they "pretend" it's not an ad? They aren't doing that.
They are trying to come up with a different way to advertise as opposed to giant banners across the top of the page (that most people ignore anyway).
Not to even mention, it CLEARLY states on those types of posts that this is *PROMOTED BY A&E*.
I just looked at the Buzzfeed homepage. For the first time actually. It clearly shows which are ads and which aren't. They just aren't plastered all around like Yahoo and some other sites.
If you ask me it looks a heck of a lot neater. Let's not fault a company (that employs 550 people by the way) for trying to find a new and innovative method of advertising. And, as I said, in a way that looks a lot nicer then Yahoo...

Everyone is NOT out to get you.

Yes, Peregrine, the idea is to trick people. Hence the phrase "convincing us ads aren't ads." I like when I know it's an ad so that I can look into buying. I don't want ads to "not look like ads" so that I'm not sure if the product is available for purchase or made up. Like product placement in movies. There are times when the product labels are fake and the product doesn't really exist.

If those silly ads can fool you, maybe you shouldn't go to those sites.

I have to agree that I hate ads made to look like legitimate links to something I might be interested in, but are just ads instead.
