I have access to a card that will provide a fake number to caller id if I so choose. It will say what ever number I designate. I think it is a great way to fool friends and relatives. Google: "CALLER ID Spoofing" for more info.

I was wondering if there is a way to send a email with a fake email address. I could act like I was someone else, maybe the boss at a company telling everyone to take the rest of the day off!

Can it be done?

Yes, I do it on my web servers. I dont send out spam but I have a mailing list and send an email from an address that dosent exist so they dont reply to it.

Faking the "reply" addresses is actually VERY easy. Most programs just take what you put in there when you setup the account. So you can just modify that field with whatever you like.

But it doesn't always work as someone can just read the header and see exactly where its coming from (which server that is). There are still ways around that... but you'd have to have your own SMTP server or find one that allows for relaying.

Unfortunately, it is very easy - most email programs let you set the sending email address to anything you would like. This, and other tricks, are commonly used for spamming and phishing.

As others said, it is very easy and spammers take advantage of it - sadly.
It was fun to do it to a friend back in the days, but now - old joke.
