I'm not a new seller and I've actually given up selling because I don't like eBay's 2008 rule changes on feedback and payment methods. I do have experience with both buying and selling on eBay, including over 200 feedbacks from selling since '99.
On the items I watch, items from sellers with less than 10 feedback seem to sell for as much as 50% less than items from sellers with more feedback. For that reason, you should probably sell a few small items (and expect them to sell at low prices) to build your feedback before you sell anything big.
I'm also a former eBay seller who left due to the latest policy changes and fee hikes.
My (totally biased) advice is to try doing whatever you're doing without using eBay. It's hard to make money there these days unless you have a very high profit margin and/or you're doing massive volume. Between the listing fees, final value fees, monthly store fees (if you go that route) and PayPal fees, they take a pretty huge chunk.
A friend of mine sells on eBay and they make about twice as much from his business as he does. That's just not right...
There's other options. First and foremost, you should have your own website with a shopping cart. Regardless of whatever other avenues you choose, this is the lowest cost route in the long run and any sales you make there is money saved. You can also utilize Amazon, Overstock, etc.
eBay has been cutting their own throat with their changes in the last year or two and I say let 'em. We need to see some real competition for them, and it won't happen unless the sellers make it happen.
