I was in my computer's network preferences re-connecting to my wifi network and noticed one of my neighbor's named their wifi access point after a high level and normally secretive federal agency. I thought, what an idiot.

Obviously a real government agency isn't going to publicly advertise their access point in a suburban neighborhood, right?... so I'm guessing this neighbor just named it that to discourage people who might know how to crack wifi passwords and/or hack into computers.

Is this illegal? I feel like this neighbor is 1.) impersonating a federal agency and 2.) unnecessarily creeping out the neighborhood as if it were some high level area for crime activity.

Sounds more like a geek sense of humor. You might polish yours a bit.

I get the humor part but, after you've had a laugh, there is still this wifi access point with the name of a serious federal agency in your neighborhood. You have to admit there's a creep out factor to it.

I'm thinking of changing my wifi access point name to: seriouslyyouneedtochangeyourwifiname

What business is it of yours? Not your circus, not your monkeys!

Sorry, but I agree with lvoc. Who cares? It's not creepy at all.
Is it "FBI Surveillance Van"? That's a popular one.

I get what you're saying...don't bother yourself with getting involved. And I did do that for awhile...I could and probably will continue to do nothing...it's not that bad...but it's still creepy.

It's a variation of that...but I won't say the exact name...

I had no idea this was that common...it seems exceedingly stupid to digitally impersonate a federal agency but if they're okay with it, I won't bother anyone about it.

Geek humor tends to be in bad taste...part of the charm.

I doubt very much it bothers the FBI or NSA...another standard target.

It's way too common to be upset about. I don't see how it's creepy- just a joke.
