I've always been a fan of comments on NPR things or Yahoo. Just a little while ago Yahoo posted a thing on the 10 most overrated travel destinations. The comments on that section were spectacular and I spent a good hour just reading about peoples travel reviews and ratings. It was great. But comments are generally funny, but trolly. As long as the voted down ones get knocked out, they seem ok.

I don't believe "Freedom of Speech" doesn't applies well to the net. A person can't just say(type) what they want on some sites, and expect to get away with it. Of course they aren't going to jail. But typically you are on that webmasters site, he can make the choice to kick a person off.(aka ban them, censor their comments). They can dictate what is allowed to be posted.

I'm someone who wants to dignified discussions on the internet regardless of anonymity.
Because a person wants to be anonymous doesn't mean a person should type malicious, ignorant things, or troll and ruin it for everyone else.

Well like I say it's fine if it goes overboard for example death threats. I'm not saying what they say is right. Not at all I'm just saying if on the rare occasion a rude person were to upset me I ignore them the old fashioned way. If anonymous commenting is what brings too many trolls then maybe there's something you've done wrong with your site because CD looks okay to me. It's their site to do with what they want though and maybe it did go overboard but I know there are plenty of people out there that are too sensitive so it wouldn't surprise me if webmasters were like that.

As for the last thing you said, I'm not saying that at all either. In fact what you said is my point. That ruins it for everyone else. If someone wants to be anonymous they can't because of malicious people.

What, 2 or 3 sites have eliminated comments? NONE, ZERO, ZILCH of the sites I visit have eliminated comments. Why would anyone ditch them? It drives traffic.

I think a lot more sites have eliminated comments. I see it more and more often.
Now, getting FB likes drives more traffic than search does, unfortunately.

Well sure FB drives traffic, but if you're a news junkie like me: I don't get my news from FB. I get it from other places, like the Google News reader and Google Now. Sites where those 2 things take me ALWAYS have comment sections.

LOL, well, the people that create fake Facebook accounts to troll ESPN obviously do not care about Facebook's ToS. "Trolling" will never go away. People should simply ignore/report those types of posts and not respond to them.

And the only way to achieve that in an anonymous forum is with moderation.

Journalism web sites are cutting staff to the bone. They don't want to devote any staff time to moderating comments.

This is obviously all Obamas fault. Because most comments nowadays say whatever the story is, is Obamas fault.
