if someone gets a modem which is also a router, will the IP address change?

That's up to the ISP and dependent on how they assign IP addresses. If they assign them to the customer, it won't change. If they assign them to the device, it will change. There are merits to both approaches.

On a side note, stay away from those all-in-one gateway devices. A separate modem and router is the better option.

IP addresses are dictated by the internet service provider, not the device.

The last IP I had,I had the same one for about 6 months..... The other day it finally changed again....

If you have a (DOCSIS compliant) cable modem, your lease will constantly be renewed as long as you are connected. I've had the same IP for years!. If you happen to be disconnected while the lease expires, you'll be assigned a new IP.

Well sometimes my IP stays the same for months and I know sometimes I am offline when the lease expires (And sometimes I manually renew the lease and @ next bootup the IP is the same)


I guess I dont understand!

By offline, I mean your cable modem has to be unplugged.
