I have been on the internet since 1992 (at work) and 1993 (at home). I am used to checking on my network settings regularly.

Something is showing up on my network configuration that I have never seen before and despite researching it, I am still clueless what it means and why it is suddenly there.

Under my Network Preferences, there are several tabs and one is "WINS" - I have never seen anything listed there before. I was having all sorts of problems with my Mac 2 weeks ago and so was going through trouble shooting and found something I have never seen before.

NetBIOS Name and Workgroup. Both those field are filled in and I have no clue why. NetBIOS Name has a 3 digit number in that field and Workgroup has a word in that field, as well.

What are these settings? I tried to delete them and they pop back up - i can't delete the settings.

Can someone explain why these settings are there and what purpose they serve and why they have never been there in the past? Do I have a data safety concern?

It's not a problem. WINS is "Windows Internet Naming Service". It is used if your Mac needs to be part of a WindowsNT/2000 Server network. The tab has been there "forever" in Mac's Net Prefs, you just may not have noticed it as you don't need it for non-Windows networks. It is similar to DNS for "the Internet".

Mine has my Mac's "name" in the first box, and the word Workgroups in the second, and nothing in the 3rd.

Thank you so much!

I have always seen the TAB there but the fields (NetBios Name and Workgroup) have never had anything FILLED IN before.

I won't worry about it, then. Appreciate your taking the time!
