Both are pretty similar. It's essentially two commodity services.

In the end, it really depends on what your needs are (anonymity, integrity, privacy, etc.). "security" isn't always black and white. If security is a big factor, you may want to look at some secure email services. But also understand what they are actually providing vs. what you are looking for/need.

Personally - I use google apps (including gmail) for just about everything. But I also realize that I'm using a free service. So the appropriate precautions are taken based on my risk appetite.

One of the reasons I really like Gmail is its use of tags, rather than folders/directories. If an email about a photography exhibit comes from my friend Tony I don't have to make a decision (like I would in Gmail) about what to do with it (put it in directory "Tony" or "Photography"). I can assign tags "Tony" and "Photography" - it may sound like a small, even petty, thing, but once you get used to the tags you'll never want to use a directory-based paradigm.

It existed before 2004. I used it in 2002. It was just not available to the public.

Have both, had Yahoo the longest. Gmail made the switch easier to import Yahoo to Gmail at the time, but Gmail won't allow to easier import back to Yahoo.

If you are new to Gmail or Yahoo, I would pick Gmail for personal email. Yahoo email is considered more spammy and out of date. Plus, Yahoo mail and its other properties have not been managed well in a while. Yahoo has been on a decline for quite a while. I use both but prefer Gmail.

Hmm, interesting replies here about how old Gmail is. Oddly, I thought Gmail email was first introduced around '04 at the earliest. I think Yahoo email was up and running around '97 after Hotmail was out for a while offering 'free" email. I believe most "free" email accounts consisted of about 2 MB in 1999 or so.

It was introduced to the public in 2004. It was available to employees much earlier.

Gmail seems to have too many add-ons, and I have trouble finding and opening my account.

Well there certainly isn't any security w/ google! They spy on you, track you, etc. Yahoo is just awful.

We went to fastmail, and they not only guarantee that they will not track you, but since their servers are not in the US, they will refuse court orders to turn over traffic records. They've already successfully done this in the past.
