Why internet access is so expensive? (work, router, password, network)

I finally found a link and able to sign up for 50 Mpbs internet for $35/month for 12 months with Time Warner. The key is that I have to buy my own cable modem/wifi which costs under $100. I don't know why the Time Warner lady I talked to on the phone refused to give me a similar deal? In my area there is only one other choice which is Verizon DSL but everybody complains about the slow speed so Time Warner is the only good choice.

We need competition but yet the cable companies are allowed to keep merging so they have a monopoly. We need more regulation against this.

My internet isn't very fast but it's $90 a month and there is no other game in town.

I pay $55.00 for 100 mbps service, and when hardwired, it has always clocked a bit over 100.
Only other cable company in town is about $40.00 per month for 7 mbps.
However, for 4K Netflix, I need at least 25 mbps. So, not complaining here.

If they were only selling to people in NYC it would b super cheap and as an added bonus you have multiple companies competing in the same market. When you expand that coverage to most of NY state the infrastructure gets expensive and you are less likely to have multiple companies competing in places with lower population density. One company may be able to profit in low density population but two are going to cut each others throats.

If you are in a low population area they may never be another game in town unless the cost of infrastructure is drastically reduced.If company A is servicing an area and company B needs all of Company A's customers to make it worth the investment then it's not going to happen. Such competition could in fact end up driving rates up.
