I was just fooling about and wondered if there was a limit to how many characters you could enter in the address bar field...

I tried it in MyIE2 and it let me enter 24,155 characters before beeping I was @ the end!!! (I put the whole string in notepad after and of course you know notepad tells you how many characters there are)

I havent tried it in IE6 yet.....

24,155??? -- Wow no one would EVER use that amount of characters!!

EDIT:

IE6 only lets me enter 2048 characters

FWIW, Firefox 47 on a Mac allowed 5785 characters, before I got tired of holding down a key.

Curiously, FF disables keyboard repeat on alphanumeric characters, but allows it on punctuation.

The best way to do it is get out to where your tired and then HIGHLIGHT THE WHOLE THING and then press CTRL-C (copy) and then press CTRL-V over and over..... (That will fill it up quite fast)

I tried it in VLC media player also.... That ones address bar let me enter 30,001 characters!!

Wow. Doing the copy paste thing got FF up over 800,000 without even pushing it

No, that's where I stopped .

My guess is that it would go on until RAM memory ran out. (or whatever is set aside as Temp Storage)

Hehe so far your browser is the winner @ over 800k and IE6 is the lowest so far (2048) -- I wonder if all IE versions only allow 2048?

I never stopped to consider it, to be honest! Interesting...

Sometimes when an URL that I want to post or email someone is very long, I use a handy free tool called Tiny Url. It generates a much shorter link.
