Does such "monitoring" software exist, that allows one to track another's activity on Craigslist?
Copied from the top of a GetRichQuick ad on Craigslist:
"For that person who has flagged me, please know that I own a program that monitors all ip addresses that flag my posts. If you feel that you need to flag me, I will know your IP address and post it all over Craigslist and locate you with whatsmyip or some other site. PLEASE DON’T TRY ME!"
My immediate reaction was BS, but my next reaction was "Well, I learn something every day.."
If he could it would be because of exploit in what HTML they allow in posts. That's unlikely because such a exploit wouldn't stay a secret for very long on such a popular site and they would patch the issue. At the very most he might be able to obtain multiple IP's of those that have viewed the ad if Craigslist allows hotlinking of images.

So, your BS meter may be tilting towards "Quite Likely BS?"

I would say very much BS, he would need to monitor the click on the link after the page was loaded using client side scripting. Client side scripting is not my cup of tea but he would need to embed something like Javascript to monitor the link and collect the IP information. Craigslist is not going to allow the use of javascript or any other scripting under any circumstances, I don't even have to look at their policies to tell you that.

Heh. It's an interesting threat, but not that hard to thwart. In my case, my location shows up correctly if I'm using my normal provider, but if I use my VPN to work and then surf, my location ends up as the location of a generic corporate IP address not even on this continent. I'm sure there are others who have similar situations. Not that I peruse Craigslist at work.
Total crock of BS from a nasty ignorant idiot. Flag him.
The post doesn't live on his computer. He doesn't have access to know who viewed it unless he works at a CL host site, and then he would be too busy to bother with such BS. He is also stupid to claim that all IP addresses are fixed and that there aren't proxy servers that hide addresses for those who care.
IF someone was stupid enough to email him and taunt him in a direct email, he MIGHT be able to get close to finding someone, but he would need outside help.
Hi everyone,
I am struggling everyday to make a living. I work in rental apartments and jealous people are flagging me every day Im putting up an add. I would wish to know so bad who would do such a thing.
Either they are competitors or my colleagues themselves who are my first competitors.
Please whoever would know how to know Please help.
Gd bless you all !
Leo
