Could it have been a random hacker? Well, it would have to be a hacker who knows each of their spouses.
This really sucks. I have known two friends who have been "gut-punched" by emails or Facebook messages out of the blue, alerting them to their husband's infidelity.
One of them actually was a Facebook message from the jilted husband to the teenage daughter of the guy who was having an affair with his wife. It was a sick way to get revenge, and the daughter is still in therapy today.
Mod cut.

Reason: Off-topic.
Someone accessed one of your phones/emails either intentionally or accidentally and sent the letters to ease their conscience?
The letter thing is weird vs telling in person/phone/text/emails in today's day and age. Definitely someone wanting to remain anonymous. A friend who swore not to say a word?
Another plausible scenario is the mistress is crazy and there was never any letter to the husband. She made the husband letter up and just sent a letter to your wife? Effectively ending things and burning you in the process.
Either way it doesn't matter, you're caught and now must face the music.

Someone, either the betrayed wife or the betrayed husband, is using the Marriage Builders playbook for breaking up an affair. This s the stage called "exposure." The MB advice calls for exposing the affair absolutely everywhere...to in-laws, children, the workplace, influential friends in the hopes that the peer pressure will break up the affair and the marriage can begin the recovery process.
Either you or your affair partner has had a keylogger installed on your computer. Check also for a voice activated recorder in your car.
Hopefully this is not a workplace affair, because your bosses know about it now.
If you sit down and close your eyes and think a little, you'll have your answer.
Either your wife has been acting weird lately or her husband or the gf. I don't believe everyone was acting totally normal and the letters came out of nowhere. Except ... one of you has kids? Or a relative living with you?
So what does the wife say? Divorce?
