Thanks to a helpful poster here (CloudyDayz, as I recall) I recently added a 5 GHz network so now I have two networks for my Apple AirPort Extreme. The result is a much more solid and consistent, albeit slightly weaker, signal. I'm not getting full subscribed speed on WiFi, but it's quite close ... several times faster than the crowded 2.6 network.
The issue is ... I changed to the 5 GHz network on my iPhone 8 Plus (OS 11.4.1), and every time I leave the house and it switches to LTE, when I come back home it switches back to the 2.6 GHz network without asking.
Any way to make the 5 GHz the default, or permanent, choice?
From settings, wi-fi, select the 2.6 network. You must have auto-join switched on.
Select the 5.0 network, switch auto-join on there.
Thanks. That's the way I have it, and it still changes. It's quite possible (and I just thought of this) that when I get out of my car, the 2.6 signal is stronger in my garage than the 5.6 (which is typical), so it autojoins the best network, being the 2.6. In that case, I'd have to turn the auto-join off, but that would cause other issues. (In actuality, I think it defaults to auto join, and you have to turn "Ask to join other networks" on ... same thing though).
Hmm, you may be right.. how about you "forget this network" on the 2g, then next time it will find the network but not have the password.
I will say though that I can't actually tell the difference between 2G and 5G while surfing on my phone. The internet speed test can, but I can't.
I really can't either, unless I know the place I'm downloading from is fast. Go here https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/spaceimages...hp?id=PIA22667 and download the high-res pictures with each network and see if you can tell any difference. You may or may not be able to ... I can because my 5 GHz network is much faster, even though I'm using the same cable input. I can go to my iMac with Ethernet and it's even faster.
You both nailed it. lol
Forget the 2.5 (not 6) GHZ Network.
And yes, this is happening because 2.5 has more range. 5 is faster but has shorter range.
